Blog and Wiki Policy

The following list of topics is suggested only as a guideline for establishing a blog or wiki policiy. The following list of topics is not intended to be a complete list of topics that should be considered when drafting a blog or wiki policy, nor is the following list of topics intended to act as legal advice. The following list of topics is provided purely for informational and educational purposes only.

At minimum, your policy should cover:

  • You're personally responsible. You, and you alone, are personally accountable for what you write.
  • Abide by existing rules. Having the ability to add or modify the content of a blog or wiki does not grant you license to ignore the guidelies of your employee handbook or any binding agreements you sign upon your employment.
  • Keep secrets. Having the ability to add or modify the content of a blog or wiki does not grant you license to discuss projects, products, or programs that are in development or testing that have not already been made publich through approved communicaiton channels of the organization.
  • Do not steal from others. Respect copyrights and trademarks.
  • Netiquette applies to blogs and wikis. If you wouldn't say it in an e-mail message, do not say it in a blog or wiki post or comment.

Other topics you might want to add to your blog or wiki policy:

  • Add value. Whatever you write should inform, clarify, promote the exchange of ideas, or forge new relationships.
  • Cite and link. When you cite another source of information, make the citation clear and provide a link to it.
  • Discuss your online activity with your manager. Ensure that what yu are writing is the best use of your time. Ensure that you are allowed to write on company time and use company assets to do so. Know the limit to which you can disagree with the opinions and policies of your company and those to whom you report.
  • Contact your personnel department if you need any clarification regarding your organization's blog and wiki policies.
